The use of heavy drilling rods in horizontal well construction can be roughly divided into two stages based on the construction progress of the horizontal well: before entering the window and after entering the window.
Before entering the window, weighted drill rods are usually added between non-magnetic drill collars and drill rods to replace drill collars and stabilize the lower drilling tools, reducing the impact of drilling tool swing on directional and wireless instruments.
After entering the window, the weighted drill rod cannot be fully placed between the non-magnetic drill collar and the drill rod, as this will greatly increase the friction caused by the inclined and horizontal sections on the drilling tool. The weighted drill pipe should be adjusted as high as possible to prevent it from entering the inclined and horizontal sections and increasing friction, but at the same time, some weighted drill pipes should be left between the drill pipe and the non-magnetic drill collar.
In the early stage of horizontal well construction, attention should be paid to controlling the wellbore trajectory to make it as smooth as possible and reduce friction during later construction.
