The square drill rod is located at the top of the drill string, and its main function is to transmit torque and bear the total amount of the drill string. The driving end face of the square drill rod is divided into square and hexagonal shapes. The most commonly used in oil drilling is square, while the water hole is hexagonal. Due to the wall thickness being about three times larger than the drill rod and made of high-strength alloy steel, it has high tensile and torsional strength.

The square drill rod is used to transform the rotation of the rotary table into the rotation of the drill string and drill bit, in order to break the formation, transmitting torque and bearing the full weight of the drill string. When using turbodrills and screw drills for drilling, the square drill rod bears the full weight and reverse torque of the drill string, and is also used to measure the depth of the well, providing a circulation channel for the drilling fluid.
