What is the working condition of the drill string during drilling

During the drilling process, the drill string alternates between working in two operations: tripping in and out and normal drilling. When tripping in and out, the drill string is in a tensioned state; whereas during drilling, its condition becomes more complex, involving tension, compression, and torsion. In rotary drilling, the working state and forces on the drill string are particularly intricate, resembling a slender rotating shaft. Under the axial pressure generated by partial self-weight, the lower section of the drill string becomes unstable and assumes a bent state. Due to the wellbore constraints, multiple bends can occur. Meanwhile, the upper section of the drill string, subjected to centrifugal forces from rotation, also deviates from a straight line. Combined with the effect of torque, the entire drill string undergoes a complex rotational motion, forming an approximately helical curve.
