The difference between drill collar and drill pipe

During the drilling process, the weight of the drill string generates the drilling pressure, resulting in compressive stress on the lower section of the drill string. The applied drilling pressure typically exceeds the critical buckling load of the drill string, causing the compressed portion to bend under its own weight. This bending introduces alternating stresses as the drill string rotates, leading to fatigue failure. To mitigate fatigue damage, the bending stress must be reduced. This requires minimizing the length of the compressed section and increasing its rigidity. Since drill collars are attached to the drill pipe to provide additional weight and prevent deviation, and their inner diameter is smaller while their weight is greater than that of the drill pipe, the lower compressed section of the drill string uses drill collars instead of drill pipe.
